A Remarkable Year for Launching The Orb

I never truly grasped until I watched it with my dad. This occurred while I was staying to my parents' house smack in the heart of the global tournament frenzy. Italy was competing, and that carried immense weight to my dad, an immigrant from the Abruzzo region. Although I perpetually considered the game boring, his passion was utterly infectious that it kept me glued to the television. I saw the matrix that day, instantly grasping all the electrifying complexities the sport had to offer and accepting its deep-seated meaning. It was crucial that the Italian squad win the match.

It's hard to explain the draw of sports to those who remain unconvinced. You need to experience that magical instant where everything clicks for yourself — or, at the very least, you need a knowledgeable mentor present to unravel the intricate regulations and expose the beating heart of the sport. Evidence from this year shows that this is something a digital title can pull off. The last twelve months presented three exceptional football games that analyzed the game in very different, user-friendly fashions.

The Cultural Touchstone: Despelote

The cornerstone title of that trio is Despelote. The independent title is a autobiographical narrative set in Ecuador. On the surface, it's a common story about a child maturing in the turn of the millennium and forging his identity. However, all of this unfolds against the canvas of an nation-defining historic moment: The country's team has made it for the World Cup, and it is the primary thing happening in the characters' lives. Football games are on every television screen. They're broadcast during ceremonies. It's the only thing anyone can discuss. Ball is life.

In this environment, we watch the main character evolve. He's not just learning where he belongs at a house party, but where he fits into his neighborhood as well. Football is inextricably linked to his being, and it's through the sport that he uncovers himself as a devoted citizen. It's the closest a video game has ever come to allowing me to comprehend my own dad and why he was so captivated to the World Cup all those years ago.

The Physical Artistry: Rematch

Where Despelote concentrates on the cultural weight of soccer, two other titles from this year delve into the mechanics of the sport itself in more approachable ways than traditional simulators. Rematch, the latest game from the creators behind Sifu, digs into the athleticism of soccer. The competitive title reimagines the sport by recasting it as a fast-paced battle played between compact squads. It draws cues from titles like Rocket League to create an arcade-style match that's focused on fluid cooperation and masterful possession.

I was utterly hooked with Rematch for a solid month this summer. On the surface, it felt easy during my first few playthroughs, but with each match I returned to it, I found greater complexity. Instead of just fundamental moves, I figured out how to dodge around defenders to sidestep a takeover. I figured out how to release the ball to block someone from knocking it away. I drilled my tricks until I could elevate a stylish maneuver into a effective defensive tactic. These myriad subtle techniques taught me about soccer in ways I couldn't possibly appreciate as a passive observer. I walked away with a deeper respect for the vital importance physical mastery plays in the game, recognizing what a physically demanding endeavor it truly is.

The Cerebral Game: Pup Champs

Whereas Rematch revealed the athletic side of soccer, Pup Champs playfully explored the strategic side. The latest title from the developers behind Golf Peaks, Pup Champs is a tactical football strategy title with dogs. Every level requires you to maneuver a few pups on a board and shoot the ball into a goal. Sounds easy, but the challenge lies in the fact that each dog has a particular movement style, they can only travel a set number of spaces, and there are blockers to navigate around. Solving a stage requires clever thinking and a tight control of the playing area. It feels like you're directing a youth soccer team, crafting the winning plays to steer your dogs to victory. While not a serious version of the sports by any means, but it's a wonderful complement to Rematch.

A New Perspective

Of course, there were also more games about soccer, as expected. Mainstream simulators launched punctually and popular strategy titles made their eagerly awaited return. But, thanks to these particular titles, I spent 2025 thinking about soccer more than I have in years. Games helped me visualize the physical artistry that goes into a pursuit I'll probably never be proficient in (too much running!) and grasp the reasons soccer holds importance to countless people. It's a notable development in game design I hope to see grow, with more creative interpretations to sports games that seek to convey the essence of a game rather than simulating it exactly. Furthermore, a handful of additional games did exactly that for other athletic pursuits this year, whether it was the open-world cycling adventures of Wheel World or the surreal trip of Skate Story. If you don't typically enjoy sports, there are increasingly more games out there that are more than happy to invite you into the club.
