Scorching conditions and intense bushfires have swept through the dry landscape of Western Australia. As temperatures expected to continue climbing above 40C (104F) over the next few days, a major alert for extreme heat has been issued across much of the south-west.

These conditions follow recent fires in New South Wales, which resulted in the destruction of properties and fatalities. Severe heatwave warnings have additionally been issued for later this week in areas within SA and NSW, as a ridge of high pressure moves eastward, delivering blazing heat to a broad swath of the area.

The combination of tinder-dry vegetation and relentless high temperatures creates a volatile situation for emergency crews.

In another part of the world, a metropolis was plunged into blackout recently after strong winds compromised the urban power grid, with falling trees knocking out power lines. The weather conditions also led to major travel disruption at a major airport, where hundreds of air services were grounded. At the same time, a valley known for its clear skies and abundant sunlight has endured one of its dullest and most overcast periods on recorded history. A specific type of low cloud, which usually lingers for only a short time, has been unusually widespread and long-lasting this year, holding temperatures at a key transport hub under 8C for more than a week – the most prolonged period in more than three decades. The prolonged fog has been driven by exceptional fall precipitation that left the ground waterlogged.

Alongside the snowfall, fierce northerly winds swept across the island chain, with wind gusts reaching 50mph observed on multiple islands. The influence of the storm is forecast to diminish this week with more seasonal weather taking hold.
