Far-Right Ex- Congressman J.A. Kast Voted In as Chile's Incoming Leader.
In a decisive second-round vote, ultra-conservative figure José Antonio Kast has secured the top job in Chile.
A Commanding Win
After over 99% of ballots counted, Kast garnered 58.17% of the vote, beating leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.
This represents Kast's third bid for the presidency, having in the past been lost by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.
Campaign Built On Law and Order and Migration
Recognized for his staunch Catholic views and regard for the rule of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was largely centered on promises to tackle growing crime and radically curb migration.
He repeatedly blamed immigrants, notably the around 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for crime rates. Throughout the race, he gave an stern warning for them to exit before the new term begins or face removal.
His plans envisioned Trump-inspired measures such as erecting camps, high walls, perimeter fencing, and increasing the armed forces presence on the northern frontier.
Within a Regional Shift
Many commentators view Kast's win as part of a broader right-wing shift in Latin America, similar to this year's electoral outcomes in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Nevertheless, other experts also describe it as a continuation of the regular alternation of power between left and right-wing administrations since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.
Leading Lacking a Strong Majority
In spite of his clear popular vote victory, Kast will not command an overall majority in parliament, neither in the lower house nor the Senate, even when various rightwing parties are combined together.
This legislative situation could challenge his agenda, such as a vow to cut public spending by billions within 18 months—a plan for which he has yet to provided concrete steps.
"There are many things about what a Kast presidency will operate that we don't know because he has not explained how he will do them," said a political analyst.
The expert continued, "Regarding economic policy, it is very likely we will see austerity policies associated with the right-wing. But where there is much less ambiguity is on public safety, because that has been his central theme during the race."
