Information Available About the Those Lost of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 individuals were killed and over 40 sustained injuries when assailants shot at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have confirmed the death toll is 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 injured people were admitted to the hospital.

The victims are yet to be formally identified, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the victims who have been named to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She described the events before the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with a number in a critical state. The injured include two officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
