Maddie McCann Brother and Sister Describe Alleged Stalker's Behavior as Deeply Disturbing and Creepy
Madeleine McCann brother and sister, Sean and Amelie, have testified in court that their interactions with an accused stalker were deeply upsetting and unsettling. The siblings described feeling anxious and frightened by a woman who claimed she was their long-lost sister.
Relentless Contact Detailed as Frightening
Testifying via video link, she described how the defendant, Julia Wandelt, contacted her repeatedly through social media and letters. Amelie explained the persistence was very frightening because it's impossible to predict what her next move might be.
Messages from the defendant were read in the trial, in which she recounted memories of being in the McCann household that she claimed were recalled during hypnotherapy. She testified, It's very upsetting that she’s coming up with these alleged recollections, despite the fact she’s not Maddie.
Altered Images Increased Unease
The court learned that Wandelt had produced images of herself and Amelie as young girls, which the prosecution said were made with AI tools. Some of these photos were sent through social media, while additional ones were produced physically and enclosed in a letter to Amelie.
She stated, I didn’t like it, it made me feel very uncomfortable. It was evident she altered the images to make me look more like her, which was very disturbing. I knew I didn’t look like that, I understood it had been manipulated.
Psychological Toll on the Household
Amelie also spoke about the impact of the supposed stalking on her parent, Kate, who testified about being approached at home by Wandelt and her alleged accomplice, a 61-year-old woman.
I think my mum experienced it as the hardest. She was harassed by the defendant to a greater extent than the others in the family and I think it definitely had a negative effect on her and her mental health, she testified. It’s upsetting when a person is pleading with you to believe them and playing with your feelings, to the point you are questioning yourself.
Sibling's Statement on Anxiety and Digital Scrutiny
In a testimony read to the trial, her brother stated that personally, he had not been too badly affected by the defendant's accused stalking. But he had been upset that she was drawing social media scrutiny, with people posting nasty and unfair things about his mother and father.
If Wandelt was not mentally ill and was fully aware she is not Maddie, yet continues to assert she is, that would be very upsetting for me, he said. I do not believe she is my sister. The reality that Julia is doing this has caused me a great deal of anxiety and I find it profoundly disturbing.
Wandelt and her co-defendant deny stalking the McCann family. Proceedings are ongoing.
