One of Avatar's most beloved installments gets a dedicated MTG collector's set.
Usually, recap episodes are loathed from viewers as a pointless time filler, or perhaps accepted as a requirement in television in the era of regular broadcasts. However, this wasn't the situation, but Avatar: The Last Airbender demonstrated this via "The Ember Island Players," a cherished episode in its last season that is now receiving a dedicated Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair release.
Details of the special release
The full Secret Lair superdrop for the upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender collection was announced earlier this month. It features five Secret Lairs, and although the one called "My Cabbages!" is an admittedly amusing nod to the show's beloved recurring figure, the additional releases appear slightly lacking creativity, with one notable exception: "The Ember Island Players."
Inspired by installment 17 in the final season of the beloved series, this Secret Lair contains these specific cards:
- 1x Phantasmal Image as "Absolutely Accurate Actor"
- 1x Braid of Fire
- 1x Cursed Mirror
- 1x Mask of Memory
- 1x Thespian's Stage
What makes this installment remains memorable
Viewers of the show fondly remember this episode, which served as a recap of the protagonist Aang and his companions' quest before the series' finale. In contrast to typical clip shows, or compilation episodes, "The Ember Island Players" did not stem by budget restrictions or creative challenges. The producers truly wanted to offer viewers an opportunity to revisit the series' story, however, they opted to do it creatively.
During the installment, the main characters view a play depicting their exploits at a playhouse on Ember Island, called The Boy in the Iceberg. The entire performance is factually incorrect, melodramatic, and utterly comical. It excels because it plays on the characters' views about themselves, juxtaposing them compared to how society (and particularly the Fire Nation citizens) views them. It contains the right amount of introspective humor, and it becomes perhaps the finest interpretation of Avatar available to date.
Appeal and cost
In terms of value, this offers a fantastic Secret Lair for one simple reason: Braid of Fire. This card sells between $20 and $40 on online marketplaces currently, and for $29.99 you can acquire the complete collection, or for $39.99 for the shiny edition.
Magic's Avatar: The Last Airbender edition will be available for pre-release events beginning November 14 and releases worldwide on November 21.
