The Generosity of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Person I Barely Knew Assisted Me Land the Role That Altered My Path

During the late 1980s, I set out on a backpacking trip to Europe with a friend. Because my travel mate was considering enrolling in graduate studies in New York, we had planned a two-week stay there on the way to London.

We got to the student accommodation, a big 10-storey building on the UWS called International House. After dropping our bags, we went directly to the canteen, where we grabbed food, sat down, and started talking to other diners.

Beside me was an individual of Iraqi origin pursuing an engineering degree at Columbia University. He inquired what I did for a living, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a scientific background and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an microscopy facility at the institution – right next door to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I ought to seek a job with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was soon departing to Europe and, more critically, I lacked a US visa.

A day later I toured the city, going back to the cafeteria that evening. The Iraqi student approached me and told me that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Since he had made the arrangement, I attended the interview – but right away explained to my prospective employer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a city where everything seems achievable – she responded: “We'll handle it. When can you start?” I never got on that flight to London.

I worked there for 36 months. An advantage of the role was that I was granted free tuition at Columbia, and I took advantage to complete a master’s of international affairs.

I never saw that student again and I am unaware of his name, but his incredible act of kindness changed my life in so many ways. I lacked the confidence or self-belief to reach out at an Ivy League university and seek a position. And, I had always wanted to study abroad, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that educational benefit.

Critically, that job in New York led me to a job in Zurich where I encountered my handsome spouse from France, with whom I am raising four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger changed my trajectory in life, and I’m forever grateful.
