A former American diplomat, a foreign policy expert, commented, "The Russian leader is attempting to disrupt the progress toward greater pressure on Russia." He added, "The outcome will become clear on Friday, but the likelihood of moving toward a ceasefire by pressuring Moscow to engage sincerely appear to have diminished."

European Energy Restrictions and Market Impact

This measure is part of the EU's forthcoming ban on purchases of refined products processed from Russian crude, which forms part of its latest restrictive measures against Russia over its military actions in Ukraine.

"This is a positive development for the oil market as it would remove a major customer of Russian crude," said Tony Sycamore, noting that oil prices were steady on Thursday.

Military Developments and Infrastructure Attacks

A massive Russian drone and missile assault targeted gas facilities in Ukraine's eastern regions on Thursday, causing outages in multiple areas. Authorities in Ukraine stated that Russia deployed hundreds of drones and many of projectiles, along with aerial munitions.

This initiative, called the "European drone defence initiative," is expected to begin working initially by the 2026 timeline and be completely operational by the following year. Brussels hopes to obtain the support of EU leaders at a summit in the coming days.
