Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Competitors will gain the option to challenge certain rulings made by the official, echoing the protocol already in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step follows just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
